July 25, 2013, 5:00 – 7:00 PM

* Note that this event is happening on a Thursday this month, instead of the usual 4th Wednesday.

If you haven’t yet experienced the beers of Sante Adarius, now is your chance.  Enjoy the innovative ales of this great brewery with fellow Slow Foodies on Thursday, July 25th from 5:00-7:00.  Sante Adarius Rustic Ales features old-world ales with some West Coast twists.  Beer is brewed in small batches, inspired by the Belgian tradition.  Many of the beers are barrel aged in former wine barrels, using various yeast and bacteria.  We will be hosting a casual happy hour at the brewery. The brewery does not serve food, but patrons are encouraged to bring and enjoy tasty snacks.  Just look for the Slow Food sign and join our group. Let’s talk beer!

June 26, 2013, 5:00 – 7:00 PM

Come join us for our monthly Stirring the Pot member meet-up. This time we can stretch our legs and enjoy a beer at Discretion Brewery. Discretion is a local brewery specializing in organic beers and offers a tasty selection of tapas style food from Main Street Garden Cafe. This is an opportunity to meet your fellow Slow-Foodies, network and enjoy some of the local flavor of Santa Cruz. We will try to be out in the beer garden, given good weather, and will have a sign to identify who we are. The meet-up starts at 5 and will go until at least 7:00. Please RSVP so we can get an idea of how many people to save space for (but last minute drop-ins are welcome

May 22, 2013, 5:00 – 7:00 PM

Please join us for Happy Hour at Vinocruz in downtown Santa Cruz, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM on May 22.

This month Christina Oatfield, Food Policy Director of the Sustainable Economies Law Center, will join us to discuss urban ag policies in the state legislature. We’ll ask her for an update on last year’s California Homemade (Cottage) Food Law (AB 1616) and to give us an introduction to this year’s follow-up Neighborhood Food Act (AB 1244) and how it will make it legal for cottage food operators and others to sell produce grown in their backyards. Time permitting we can dive into AB 551, which lets cities offer tax incentives for declaring urban land to be used for agriculture; and perhaps even talk about possibilities for future bills.

Mark your calendars. Plan to come out to join us for a glass of good wine and good conversation about these important topics. See you soon.

A SUSTAINABLE FOOD SYSTEM MUST INCLUDE SUSTAINABLE LABOR PRACTICES

How do restaurant workers live on some of the lowest wages in America? And how do poor working conditions – discrimination, exploitation, and unsanitary kitchens – affect the meals that arrive at our restaurant tables?  In Behind the Kitchen Door, Saru Jayaraman sets out to answer these questions by following the lives of restaurant workers in nine major cities.  Blending personal narrative and investigative journalism, Behind the Kitchen Door is a groundbreaking exploration of the political, economic, and moral implications of dining out. Jayaraman sets out a bold agenda to raise the living standards of the nation’s second-largest private sector workforce–and ensure that dining out is a positive experience on both sides of the kitchen door.

Co-sponsored with the University of California Santa Cruz.

February 27, 2013, 5:00 -7:00 PM

Please join us for Happy Hour at Vinocruz in downtown Santa Cruz, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM on February 27.  This month we’ll discuss the dollars and *sense* of Slow Food, which is often paradoxically more expensive than the mainstream version. We’ll try to define “affordable,” and describe how that differs from “cheap.” We’ll hear from local farmer Sarah Lopez of Fiesta Farm about what affects the pricing of meat, eggs, and dairy products, both in large grocery chains and at the farmer’s market. This discussion will reach beyond the realm of sales pitches about why people should be willing to pay more for Slow Food, digging deeper into questions about who can afford it and how. Slow Food may or may not be for everybody, but COULD it be? Join us to find out!

Join us for what promises to be a good conversation.
